How is Acne Treated?

While we often associate breakouts with those formidable teen years, the fact of the matter is that almost everyone can and will experience acne, regardless of age. In fact, adults well into their 40s and 50s can also struggle with acne. While there is no miracle cure on the market to get rid of acne, our Reston, VA, dermatologist Dr. Theodore Sebastien and his team offer a variety of treatment options and strategies to help you finally get your acne under control.

Our dermatologists are focused on creating a treatment plan customized to your needs. This includes factoring in the cause and severity of your acne. While teens and adults who are dealing with the occasional blackhead or whitehead may turn to over-the-counter medications and cleansers and see effective results, those dealing with severe, painful and even cystic acne will need to turn to a qualified skin specialist for care. This is where we come in.

If you have moderate to severe acne we can help you find the right medication to manage your symptoms. This may include a combination of topical and oral medication. Topical creams containing retinoids and azelaic acid can help to reduce inflammation caused by bacteria, while also removing dead skin cells to prevent clogged pores. Along with these topical medications, a dermatologist may also recommend antibiotics, either in topical or oral form. Antibiotics can also kill acne-causing bacteria.

Treating acne takes time. While there is no “cure”, Dr. Sebastien and his team can help you find ways to better manage your breakouts.

Those with more severe cystic, nodule acne will require immediate and aggressive treatment to prevent scarring (a complication of untreated cystic acne). Your dermatologist may prescribe a strong medication known as isotretinoin (e.g. Accutane), which shrinks the oil glands and prevents oil overproduction.

Along with medications, there are several other ways to reduce your acne symptoms. Some of these include a variety of dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as special therapies and treatments such as chemical peels, facials and laser treatments, which can be performed right here in our office.
